The Top 10 Items you do NOT need in your Hospital Bag!

Like baby shopping lists, there are plenty of hospital packing lists to be found online and once again this information can be extremely overwhelming. Let’s look at some common items on these lists that you do not really need to bring.

Laptop

Why Not: The last thing you want or need to be doing while in labor is working and if you are thinking that you need it for entertainment, then you are probably leaving your home too soon. You should stay home until your labor has progressed far enough that you are not likely to be seeking entertainment but focused on the moment. After baby comes you will be focused on your new arrival and not likely to even touch the device, if you do get bored you will have your phone and I have yet to see the recovery suite that does not have a television and cable.

Extra Underwear

Why Not: To put it bluntly you are going to be a hot mess down there (even if you deliver via cesarean). Use the mesh undies that the hospital provides and save the others for once things are somewhat back to normal. Bonus Tip: you can gently wash out the mesh undies and reuse them and if you ask your nurse, they will usually give you a pair or two to take home to use once you are discouraged.

Why Not: Seriously no one has time for that! It will just be another thing for you to keep up with and you can easily fill the details in once you are home. If you want a copy of the baby’s footprint, have it done on a blank sheet of paper and you can add it into the book.

Birth Playlist

Why Not: This is another thing that in the heat of the moment is really not going to matter and you might not really want once things get going. If you feel that you really will want/need music find a favorite station on Spotify or Pandora and let it play.

More than one Baby Outfit

Why Not: Yes you need an outfit to bring your baby home in, but while you are staying at the hospital they will have clothing for your baby to use. No need to create extra laundry or have the new clothes ruined with cord blood or a nasty first BM.

Why Not: The hospital will provide them, in fact, there will be extra to take home (once they open a package it is yours, take it you paid for it!).

Breast Pump

Why Not: Unless there is a medical reason that you cannot directly nurse your baby then it is not advised to pump before 6 weeks postpartum. If there is a medical reason then the hospital will provide you with a pump.

Pre-pregnancy Clothes

Why Not: I hate to be the bearer of bad news, but just in case this is your first baby and you do not already know, you will not immediately go back to your previous size, instead you will probably feel like you are still around 6 months pregnant. I always wanted a new going home outfit so I would buy something that would become part of my nursing/postpartum wardrobe. Some stretchy comfy pants, a nursing top or tank, nursing bra and a cardigan or lose pullover top does nicely depending on the season.

Your Entire Makeup Bag

Why Not: More wasted space, bring a few cosmetic basics for going home day and a few pictures, but you are probably going to be rocking the natural look for at least the next two years!

Why Not: I am sure you have seen these cute gowns designed to replace your hospital gown with a hefty price tag to go with them. I am not going to tell you not to buy one, they are great for at home the first few weeks, but just wear the hospital gown at the hospital because it is going to get trashed. If you are concerned about modesty ask for two and wear one like a robe.

I hope this list brings helps your prioritize a bit and stream line your packing!
