So many women put a great amount of effort and expense into a maternity wardrobe with little thought given to what they are going to wear after the baby arrives!

If you are breastfeeding then investing in a postpartum wardrobe is a huge self-care investment. Even if you do not plan to breastfeed you will want to invest in a few transitional pieces. Personally, I would invest more in this wardrobe then my maternity wardrobe, you will most likely nurse for at least a year so these clothes are going to be your staples for quite a while. Below is my basic nursing wardrobe shopping list, these items are minimum to get you through.

Nursing Bras

Start off with at least three in neutral colors such as black or grey, white and nude.

Nursing Tanks

As with bras, start with three basic colors depending on what you what the color scheme of your wardrobe to be and then add one fun one (stripes, dots...).

Nursing Tees

It is nice to have at least a white and a black or grey tee that has nursing access so that you do not need to layer as much, especially in the hot months.

Leggings/Yoga Pants

You will want these in the base colors of your wardrobe, at lease three pairs. If you can afford a splurge then go for the high waist postpartum ones as they help support everything plus provide tummy coverage when you are nursing.

Long Cardigan Sweaters

You will want at least two in your base wardrobe colors, remember that you will mostly likely be nursing for about a year so you will need to be comfortable in all seasons and sweaters will make sure short and sleeveless purchases go through all seasons.

Nursing Dress

In the course of your nursing journey it is likely that you will need to attend at least one formal event, so I suggest at least one dress with nursing access, preferably in black (I had a funeral when I was 3 months PP!) and short or sleeveless to get you through all seasons.

Nursing Gowns/PJ'S

You will want at least two so that you can swap them out to wash.

This is a good start to building a base wardrobe, then you can mix in more colors and patterns as you find items that you like. Having a well fitting and comfortable postpartum wardrobe will help you be more comfortable in your transition year so it is a investment well made!
