As I was siting trying to figure out this weeks topic, many ideas came to mind, DIY Father's day gifts, Father's Day Shopping Guide, The perfect Father's Day BBQ menu? While I am sure that any of these topics would have been well received, somehow the seemed lacking and empty to me. I just kept thinking about how important a father figure is in a child's life, in many ways ranging from emotional well being to development.

Emotional Development

Children look to fathers to be the enforcers and protectors. Children also seek their fathers approval, so having an involved and supportive father promotes their growth and strength. Studies have shown that an affectionate and supportive father instills a sense of well-being and confidence.

Relationships

Fathers also influence how we react with other people. The way a father treats his child will directly influence how that child acts in their own future relationships. The father also influences the types of people that a child forms relationships with.

Daddy's Girl?

Girls especially look to their fathers for emotional support and security. A father also mirrors to his daughter what a loving relationship with a man should look like. Daughters tend to look for men with the same characteristics as their father when choosing future partners.

Mini Me

Unlike girls, boys model themselves after their fathers and not their relationships. Boys will consistently seek approval from their father's from a very young age. When fathers are absent boys seek other male role models to set the "rules" and teach them how to behave in the world.

This is just a small overview of a deep and complex topic. The main point being we need our Dads! So don't forget to tell your Dad that you love and appreciate everything that he has done for you!
