Keeping your toddler engaged and entertained can be a challenge! Having these 5 easy to put together activities ready to go can be a lifesaver when you are faced with a bored toddler. I recommend rotating the activities so they do not lose their magic!
Dino Dig
Supplies: Plastic dinosaurs, Plastic tub or bowl, rice, shovel
Play: Bury the plastic dinosaurs in the container filled with rice and then have your toddler dig them out. This can go along with a book about dinosaurs or a discussion about fossils to add a learning element.
Car Park
Supplies: Flash Cards (numbers or colors or both), toy cars
Play: Lay out the flashcards on the floor or table to create a “parking lot” then direct your toddler to either “park” the correct number of cars by the appropriate flash card, or match the correct car color to the appropriate flash card depending on their abilities.
Construction Site
Supplies: Large casserole pan, dry beans, toy construction trucks
Play: Fill the pan with dry beans and have your toddler use their construction trucks to move the “rocks” around the “building site”. This can go along with a book about construction or a discussion about size, (large pile of “rocks” vs small pile).
Toy Wash
Supplies: Large wash tub or casserole pan, warm water, dish soap, sponges, scrub brushes, toys
Play: Fill the container with warm, soapy water and then allow your toddler to “wash” their toys. This goes along well with a cleanliness/hygiene discussion.
Excavation
Supplies: Ice tray, water, small toys, plastic hammer
Play: Freeze some small toys into ice cubes, then on a warm day, take them outside and let your toddler use the hammer to break the toys out. This go can along with a book about the Ice Age.
